Useful under-stairs pantry and storage

Brita lives by the sea in the south of Sweden in a house built in 1933. She had always dreamed of having a walk-in pantry. There was a space beneath the staircase that had previously housed a toilet. Brita decided that with the help of Elfa she would convert that space into a practical area for storing dry foods and cleaning stuff.

This is what she did:

After measuring all the angles and corners, Brita made a simple sketch of the space. She recommends carefully measuring every inch to get it right first time round. She wrote a few lines explaining that she wanted to store dry foods and various cleaning items there. She then sent this with her sketch, measurements and some photos of the space to Elfa. They came back with a suggestion that was tweaked a few times until everyone was satisfied that the solution was suitable for the space and the items that Brita wanted to store there.

On door storage

Brita decided that storage on the back of the door would give her easy access to the cleaning products she uses every day. The mesh baskets let her see where all these items are at a glance.

What Brita likes most about her back-of-the-door storage is that the watering jug now has its own spot and doesn’t keep tipping over. She used two types of hooks.

Brita used the following products:

Shelf storage

Narrow shelves were installed just inside the space so there’s room for Brita to get in and see what dry goods she has stored there. Narrow shelves are good for storing smaller items that you can see at a glance, so you don’t go buying things that you already have at home.

The large mesh basket is practical for dishcloths, new washing-up brushes, scouring pads and other cleaning items. It can be pulled out, making it easy to see what’s in there.

Brita used the following products:

Cleaning equipment

Brita’s cleaning equipment is stored furthest down, partly because the larger items like the vacuum cleaner and buckets fit better there and because she doesn’t want bits dropping off cleaning equipment onto the food.

Brita used the following products:

She is really pleased with the smart holders that keep the mop in place and the larger holder that is perfect for the vacuum cleaner accessories.

Brita chose to place her dry food items on the top shelves closest to the door as she uses them daily.

Why did you choose Elfa?

“Its flexibility and discreet design are the main advantages. Life brings changes which means our needs for storage space keep changing too. Elfa’s shelves and systems let me make whatever adjustments I want and, best of all, I can use what I have without having to buy anything new. I’m really satisfied with Elfa’s shelves, accessories and storage solutions. Their classic design and top quality will definitely stand the test of time.
